When an appliance breaks down, one of the biggest frustrations I see is people ordering the wrong spare part. It wastes time, money, and often leads to unnecessary delays in getting the machine working again.

That’s why I take a careful, methodical approach before any part is ordered or fitted. My goal is simple — make sure the correct part is identified first time, based on proper diagnosis, not guesswork.

Why Getting the Right Spare Part Matters

Modern appliances often have multiple versions of the same model, with small internal differences that are not visible from the outside.

Even parts that look identical can:

  • Have different connections

  • Operate at different ratings

  • Fit only specific production runs

  • Be superseded by updated manufacturer versions

This is why relying on appearance alone often leads to incorrect parts being ordered.

Step 1: I Always Start With the Model and Serial Number

The first thing I check is the appliance rating plate.

This allows me to identify:

  • Exact model version

  • Production variations

  • Manufacturer-approved parts list

  • Compatible replacements or updated parts

Without this information, ordering parts becomes guesswork — and that’s when mistakes happen.

Step 2: I Diagnose the Fault Before Ordering Anything

I don’t order parts based on assumptions.

Instead, I carry out a full diagnosis to confirm:

  • The exact failed component

  • Whether the part has failed electrically or mechanically

  • If another underlying issue has caused the fault

This is important because replacing the wrong part doesn’t fix the problem and often leads to repeat failures.

Step 3: I Cross-Reference Manufacturer Part Information

Once the fault is confirmed, I cross-check:

  • OEM part numbers

  • Manufacturer diagrams

  • Updated or superseded parts

  • Compatible alternatives where appropriate

This ensures the replacement part is correct for that exact appliance version.

Step 4: I Explain the Repair Clearly Before Any Work Is Done

Before proceeding, I always explain:

  • What has failed

  • Why it has failed

  • What part is required

  • Whether the repair is worth doing

This gives you full clarity before any cost is committed.

My Repair Charges

To keep pricing clear and simple:

  • Call-out and diagnosis: £65

  • Labour from (if repair is carried out): £35

  • Spare parts: charged at cost

Once I’ve diagnosed the fault, I provide a clear estimate so you know exactly what the repair will involve.

Why This Approach Saves Time and Money

By correctly identifying the fault first, it helps avoid:

  • Ordering incorrect parts

  • Repeat visits for the same issue

  • Delays waiting for new components

  • Unnecessary repair costs

In many cases, this approach actually reduces the overall repair cost.
