Many homeowners search for washing machine repair in Benfleet \, Canvey, Basildon, Corringham and surrounding Essex areas as soon as they notice something isn’t quite right — unusual noises, leaks, not draining, or the drum not spinning properly. The problem is, it’s often hard to tell whether it’s a minor fault or something more serious.

With over 15 years of hands-on appliance repair experience across Southend-on-Sea, Benfleet, Leigh-on-Sea, and the wider South Essex area, I’ve seen the most common washing machine faults time and time again — and in many cases, they’re far more affordable to fix than people expect. I started off reconditioning used washing machines that people would get rid of to replace because they broke down. The majority of the time, the washing machine that was discarded had a simple fault, and I would have it back up and running again and in someone else's kitchen within a few days.

In this updated 2026 guide, I’ll explain the most common washing machine problems I’m currently repairing locally, typical repair costs, and when it makes more sense to repair rather than replace. You can also take part in the quick polls included to help you decide what’s right for your situation.

  • 0%It won’t spin properly

Common Washing Machine Faults & Typical Repair Costs (2026 Guide)

If you’re searching for washing machine repair in Southend, Benfleet, or surrounding Essex areas, here are the most common faults I’m currently seeing—along with realistic repair cost ranges.

💦 Washing Machine Not Draining

One of the most common call-outs.

This is often caused by:

• Blocked pump or filter

• Coins or debris stuck in the pump

• Faulty drain pump

In some cases, the sump hose can be blocked, and it would take a bit more work to get draining again.

In all cases, this is a straightforward fix and much cheaper than replacing the machine.

🌀 Washing Machine Not Spinning Properly

If your clothes are coming out soaking wet, the spin cycle may not be working correctly.

Common causes include:

• Worn carbon brushes

• Faulty pressure switch

• Drive belt issues

💷 Typical repair cost: £90–£160

These faults are very common in Benfleet and surrounding areas and are usually repairable the same day. I keep the more common carbon brushes in stock to do the repair on the day of the visit. Feel free to send me a video of your washing machine when it's running, and I can diagnose it from that information and ensure I come along with the relevant spares needed. WhatsApp is the easiest way to do that using my number 07544 94 35 94. On the Benfleet Appliance Repairs website, there are buttons that will give you a direct link to message us.

🚪 Door Won’t Lock or Open

If the machine won’t start or you’re locked out after a cycle, it’s often due to:

• Faulty door lock mechanism

• Wiring or connection issues

Door lock faults are extremely common and rarely mean the machine needs replacing. The image below is from an Indesit washing machine that had a burnt connection. An easy fix and one that would take less than an hour to complete and would save you buying a replacement washing machine.

🔊 Loud Banging or Excessive Vibration

If your washing machine sounds like it’s about to take off across the kitchen floor, it’s usually caused by:

• Worn shock absorbers

• Suspension problems

• Uneven installation

💷 Typical repair cost: £80–£150

Ignoring this can lead to further damage, so it’s worth getting it checked sooner rather than later. Not as often does this flag up, but with heavy use, it can become a fault.

⚠️ Washing Machine Showing Error Codes

Modern machines display error codes when something isn’t right.

These often relate to:

• Faulty sensors

• Water level issues

• Electrical faults

💷 Typical repair cost: £90–£180

A proper diagnosis can often save you from replacing a machine unnecessarily. When fault codes start coming up on your washing machine, it would often stop it from progressing through the selected wash cycle.

The above are just a few of the faults I come across. Message me with a description of the fault, along with pictures, make, and model of the appliance. I will be able to check your appliance to diagnose it properly and ensure that I have the spares needed to get it back up and running.

I often see messages on social media where a post comes up asking for a recommendation for an appliance repair company to repair their washing machine (or tumble dryer, oven). I would prefer to have people recommend me to their friends and family locally on those sites. Word of mouth is the main source of my customers, and I appreciate all reviews that have been made as well.

What’s your biggest concern right now?

  • How much the repair will cost

  • Whether it’s worth repairing at all

  • How quickly it can be fixed

  • I just want it working again

When faults become expensive

Major issues like drum bearing failure or control board faults can cost more and may not be economical on older machines. This is where an honest assessment matters.

Why early repair saves money

Small faults often get worse if ignored. Catching a problem early can turn a major repair into a minor one.

What would you do if the repair cost less than a new machine?

  • Book a repair straight away

  • Get a professional opinion first

  • Still consider replacing

  • I’m undecided

Is It Worth Repairing or Replacing a Washing Machine?

One of the most common questions I get asked is whether a washing machine is worth repairing or if it's time to replace it.

In many cases, repairs are surprisingly cost-effective. Faults such as blocked pumps, faulty door locks, worn belts, damaged heating elements and drainage issues can often be repaired for far less than the cost of a new machine.

As a general guide, if your washing machine is under 7 years old and otherwise in good condition, a repair is often the most economical option. Even on older machines, it can be worth having the fault diagnosed before deciding to replace it.

I always aim to provide honest advice so you can make an informed decision based on the age, condition and repair cost of your appliance.

Recent Washing Machine Repairs in Southend and Essex

Recent repairs have included:

  • Bosch washing machines not draining due to blocked or faulty pumps.

  • Hotpoint washing machines failing to spin because of worn carbon brushes.

  • Beko washing machines leaking water from damaged door seals.

  • Samsung washing machines displaying drainage error codes.

  • Indesit washing machines suffering from faulty door interlocks.

  • Hoover washing machines with heating faults causing cold washes.

Many of these faults were resolved at a fraction of the cost of replacing the appliance.

What To Do If Your Washing Machine Starts Leaking

If your washing machine starts leaking water, it's important to act quickly.

  1. Turn the appliance off.

  2. Isolate the water supply if possible.

  3. Avoid using the machine until the cause has been identified.

  4. Clean up any standing water to reduce the risk of damage to flooring or cabinets.

  5. Arrange a repair as soon as possible.

Even a small leak can worsen over time and potentially damage flooring, kitchen units and nearby appliances.

Some modern washing machines are fitted with anti-flood systems that may help reduce the risk of major flooding, but they should still be inspected if any signs of leaking are present.
